HOMES in Notts will be targeted by Burglar Bill in a police operation to remind residents to lock their doors.A police officer or police community support officer will be trying to enter houses this month to warn of the risks of leaving them unlocked. They will be touring neighbourhoods complete with swag bag, mask and stripey T-shirt.
A third of all burglaries are committed at insecure homes and uniformed officers will also be offering crime prevention advice when Burglar Bill is in the area.Notts Police are also warning householders to be even more alert to the possibility of sneak-in burglaries during hot weather. In April and May this year, 285 properties were entered through an unlocked door or open window.
Detective Chief Superintendent Neil James said: “It only takes a couple of seconds for a thief to reach in through an open window or walk inside an unlocked door and steal a handbag, car keys, iPod and all sorts of other valuable items.
“Often people don’t realise what has happened until they want to go out and by then the thief is long gone, along with their belongings.
The operation is to show how easy it can be for burglars.
